Di no al racismo - Say no to racism

Just a couple of days ago, a friend of mine posted this video. Maybe I've heard the song a while ago but I absolutely like the rhythm and the lyrics. I know the lyrics might sound kinda of utopian, but anyway, I do believe that in a diverse and "big-small" world like ours, we definetely need more understanding and more ways to comprehend and learn from other countries, cultures and ways of seeing life.

Here are some lines of the song I particulary liked:

It's all one blood, don't care about your face
The color of your eye or the tone of your skin
Don't care where you are, don't care where you've been

----

The place where the little language is UNITY
And the continent is called Pangea

Forget about all that evil, that evil that they feed ya

We are one people

One tribe, onte tribe, one tribe, one time, one planet, one race.
....

Lord, help me out
and I don't wanna sound like a preacher
But we need to be one

One world, one love, one passion,
one tribe, one understanding.
- One Tribe by The Black Eyed Peas -

So now reflecting and thinking about the lyrics... it reminds me of Guatemala. According to the CIA World Factbook and a data from UNAM (Universidad Autónoma de México) the country's ethnic composition is:

55% Native American
35% Mestizo (mixed)
8% White (european)
+- 1% Caribbean-African-American
< 1% Other ethnic groups

So, in a society like ours is even ridiculous to think that mestizos, indigenous or whites could be racist with other ethnic group.

It's absolutely unacceptable that in a country where more than half of the population is indigenous and more than 80% of the population has some indigenous blood on it veins phrases like "no seás indio" (don't be an indio) still are used to denote someone that is being foolish, did something wrong or said something stupid.

It's time that in Guatemala everyone recognizes that prejudices only stops development and that it affects everyone whether they have white, Asian or Native ancestry.

If you are reading this and you're from Guatemala let's start by stopping people to say racist comments or jokes. Make a difference!
